If you're headed to Queenstown on New Zealand's enchanting South Island, the memorable day trip to Glenorchy reveals a treasure trove of natural wonders. Taking around 45 minutes (without stops), this has got to be one of the most spectacular short road trips in New Zealand.
Start your adventure by driving along the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road, a
smooth, windy stretch that hugs the picturesque shores of Lake Wakatipu. Across the lake, the alps tower into the sky and in the cooler months are capped in snow.
Around 10 minutes out of Queenstown, time for your first stop at the stunning Wilson Bay. It's a great place to soak in those tranquil lake views, or to enjoy a laid-back picnic under the clear NZ skies.
Or if you are feeling energetic, take a walk along the Wilson Bay Track.
Further along, you’ll come across the magical Twelve Mile Delta.
This spot is a must for "Lord of the Rings" fans as it's one of the stunning locations for the Ithilien Camp. Even if you’re not a film buff, the landscape here invites you to take a leisurely walk or just sit and marvel at the beauty around you.
The walk to Bob's Cove covers around 7 kilometres return, and takes 2-4 hours along a well maintained easy grade track.
As you continue, don't miss Bennett’s Bluff Lookout, roughly a 25-minute drive from Queenstown.
The easy walk to the viewing point along a graded track only takes around 15 minutes return and is well worth it.
Here, the expansive panoramic views of the pristine lake and surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking. Keep your camera handy – no filter needed, I promise!
Finally, as you reach the charming township of Glenorchy, you'll find
yourself in a scene straight out of a postcard. Surrounded by towering
peaks and sparkling waters, Glenorchy is a perfect end to this scenic
drive. Enjoy the local cafes like Mrs. Woolley's, and maybe take a little stroll to soak in
the laid-back atmosphere. Be sure to head out to the Red Shed, and while you are there, walk out onto the jetty and see if you can spot some of the huge eels and trout that congregate around the pylons.
So there you have it, friend! This
drive is not just a route; it's an invitation to connect with the
soul-stirring beauty of New Zealand. Enjoy every moment!
